Skip to main contentBiographyThe present vase was designed by Fernand Cesar Auguste Bernard James Moreau (1853-1920, French/American). He was born and educated in France and emigrated to Washington, DC in 1880, where he operated a studio for two years before moving to New York. He was drawn to Chicago in 1893 by work for the world's fair and he stayed on in that city. By 1902, he was teaching an evening course in Ornamental Modeling at the Art Institute of Chicago in association with Chicago sculptor Lorado Taft. Moreau joined the American Terra Cotta & Ceramic Company as a modeler in 1904. He modeled architectural ornament and worked in the potteries until World War I when he devoted his time to war work and aid for France. He died April 2, 1920. [1]
