DescriptionStratton Coyner was interviewed by Lu Ann Jones as part of the Reynolda Oral History Project. After graduating with a law degree from the University of North Carolina in 1926, Coyner started practicing law in Asheville. In 1927 he was hired by Dick Reynolds to assist in making a bid to take over a postal route in New York. Coyner spent the next several years working for Reynolds Aviation and the Curtiss Field Aerodrome Development Company. In 1932, Coyner started a law practice in Winston-Salem with Dick Reynolds as his primary client. Coyner also served as assistant treasurer to the Democratic National Committee during the time Dick Reynolds served as treasurer. In his interview, Coyner provides insights into the business and political life of Dick Reynolds, including his time spent as mayor of Winston-Salem.
ProvenanceThe Reynolda House Museum of American Art Oral History Project, established in 1980, gathered recollections from Reynolds family members and former employees, residents, and guests of the Reynolda estate. The interviews explore life at Reynolda and in Winston-Salem, N.C., during the early and mid-twentieth century, touching on the area’s socioeconomic, political, business, and cultural history. Early interviews conducted in 1980 were done by Lu Ann Jones; later interviews were conducted by museum staff.
