DescriptionView of Sun Porch interior, facing east. Furnishings visible include wicker chairs, a settee, and rockers. Katharine Reynolds furnished the Sun Porch with painted wicker furniture and potted plants. Hygiene was a major concern in any home during this period and was especially important to her. She chose wicker for seasonal porch furniture, because it was viewed as natural, hygienic, and ventilated—with the additional benefit of being lightweight and easy to move. The tall, partially enclosed chair was designed and promoted as a beach chair, allowing for ventilation while still blocking some elements.ProvenanceGift of Brook Reynolds
