DescriptionNadeina Gibson Buchanan was interviewed by Lu Ann Jones for the Reynolda Oral History Project. Buchanan was the daughter of Reynolda electrician Robert L. Gibson. Buchanan moved to Reynolda with her family in 1914 when she was a year old. She attended the Reynolda School, was friends with Nancy Susan Reynolds, and taught music in her adult life. She lived on the Reynolda estate after her marriage until the mid 1930s. Buchanan’s interview provides insights about Katharine Reynolds and the Reynolds and Babcock families. Through her childhood recollections, Buchanan offers a vivid look at what life was like for employees and their families on the Reynolda Estate. She describes education, work, and play throughout the farm and village.

ProvenanceThe Reynolda House Museum of American Art Oral History Project, established in 1980, gathered recollections from Reynolds family members and former employees, residents, and guests of the Reynolda estate. The interviews explore life at Reynolda and in Winston-Salem, N.C., during the early and mid-twentieth century, touching on the area’s socioeconomic, political, business, and cultural history. Early interviews conducted in 1980 were done by Lu Ann Jones; later interviews were conducted by museum staff.
