DescriptionJames Lash, better known as Ed, was interviewed in 1995 for the Reynolda Oral History Project. Born in Bethabara in 1915, Ed Lash came to Reynolda in 1921. His father, Jim Lash, began working at the Reynolda farm in 1912 as a teamster clearing the grounds. He later worked in the dairy. Jim Lash first walked to Reynolda from Bethania before moving to Five Row with his wife Cora in 1918. Ed Lash, along with his eight siblings, attended the school at Five Row. In 1935, he married Ida B. Lash and continued to live in Five Row with his family. Lash
cleaned the underground tunnels, worked as a handyman at the polo club, and later worked for the Babcock family as a butler. Lash served in the marines during World War II. In 1949, he worked at Joe King's studio in Reynolda Village.

ProvenanceThe Reynolda House Museum of American Art Oral History Project, established in 1980, gathered recollections from Reynolds family members and former employees, residents, and guests of the Reynolda estate. The interviews explore life at Reynolda and in Winston-Salem, N.C., during the early and mid-twentieth century, touching on the area’s socioeconomic, political, business, and cultural history. Early interviews conducted in 1980 were done by Lu Ann Jones; later interviews were conducted by museum staff.
