DescriptionRosalie Miller (1911-2007) was interviewed at Reynolda House and at her home by Lu Ann Jones for the Reynolda Oral History Project. Born in Davie County, Rosalie Miller grew up in Hanestown where her family worked in the hosiery factory. Rosalie and her family later worked in domestic service for the Hanes family. On December 4, 1937, Rosalie married Harvey Miller, the butler for the Babcock family. After her marriage, Rosalie worked for the Babcocks first as a kitchen maid then an upstairs maid. During her interview, Rosalie discussed working in domestic service and described what it was like to live and work at Reynolda.
ProvenanceThe Reynolda House Museum of American Art Oral History Project, established in 1980, gathered recollections from Reynolds family members and former employees, residents, and guests of the Reynolda estate. The interviews explore life at Reynolda and in Winston-Salem, N.C., during the early and mid-twentieth century, touching on the area’s socioeconomic, political, business, and cultural history. Early interviews conducted in 1980 were done by Lu Ann Jones; later interviews were conducted by museum staff.
