DescriptionIn March 1905, Katharine and R.J. Reynolds boarded the ocean liner The Baltic, a White Star Line ship and then the largest vessel in the world, en route to their three-month grand tour of Europe. The carefully planned trip began in London and included stops in Paris, Lucerne, Naples, Rome, Vienna, and Venice. At the end of their trip, RJ and Katharine boarded the Celtic, another White Star Line ship, in Liverpool on 16 June to sail for New York.

While in Paris on their honeymoon, Katharine and R.J. were photographed by French photographer and portraitist, Eugene Pirou, who used these images to create the portraits that currently hang in R.J. Reynolds’s Study at Reynolda House. Pirou took two photographs of Katharine Reynolds. This over-the-shoulder pose was not the photograph selected to be Pirou's model for Katharine's portrait.

ProvenanceOriginally part of the Reynolds Family Papers, the bulk of which was given to Wake Forest University by Nancy Susan Reynolds on 15 May 1976 and 22 February 1982. Other items were received by Wake Forest as transfers from Reynolda House, Inc. In 1993, the Reynolds Family Papers were transferred from Wake Forest University when Reynolda House Museum of American Art established its own Archives. At some point in the collection’s history, the photographs were removed and became their own distinct record unit—Reynolda House Historic Photographs Collection.
