ProvenanceThe Reynolds Family Papers were transferred from Wake Forest University in 1993 when Reynolda House Museum of American Art established its archives. The bulk of this collection was originally received by Wake Forest University as a gift from Nancy Susan Reynolds, 15 May 1976 and 22 February 1982. Other items were received by Wake Forest as transfers from Reynolda House, Inc., 13 August 1976, 30 November 1976, 15 June 1978, 6 October 1980, 28 October 1980, and 26 January 1981.

DescriptionR. J. Reynolds' letter to his soon-to-be-wife Katharine Smith written shortly before their marriage on 27 February 1905. Writing from the New Hoffman House, Madison Square, N.Y., R. J. Reynolds expresses great joy about the upcoming wedding: "I feel that no one on earth that is blessed with a more noble earnest sincere lovely & sweeter or better wife than I will have in you. I love & respect you so much more than I ever did anyone else, that I realy [sic] feel that I never before knew what real true love was; & it must be gods blessing in having me to wait for you & receive more happiness than earlier marriage would have given me. My future life never before looked as bright & lovely to me as it now does.
